Pretty Little Lairs: Who I Think A Should Have Been

I’ve rewatched Pretty Little Liars too many times, and I will stand by this forever: Aria should have been A.

Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery

She was literally the perfect choice. No one would suspect their own friend is torturing them from the inside.

1. Aria was lowkey mean.

She was especially to Hanna. She always had this judgmental tone like she thought she was above everyone else. Even when she wasn’t directly doing something wrong, she had this energy that felt off. It would not have been hard to twist that into something darker.

2. Why was Aria’s doll in Mona’s lair dressed like A?

Every other doll looked like the girls in their normal style. Aria’s was in the black hoodie. That is not subtle. That is a choice. A never did things that weren’t significant.

3. Burning Ezra’s book.

He literally said he thought he knew who A was. Instead of reading every page and exposing it, she burns it. Why would you destroy information like that unless you didn’t want something getting out?

4. Writing Her Name Like A.

Also the Halloween train episode. When she writes her name on the window and the A looks exactly like A’s signature. The slanted middle line crossing over the sides. That was too specific to be random.

5. Mona’s Radley Message

Then Mona in Radley saying, “Miss Aria, you’re a killer, not Ezra’s wife.” They brushed it off as a code about Maya, but what if it was not code? What if Mona was being literal and nobody listened?

And speaking of Maya… what did she know? The show never really ties that up cleanly. Maya being too nosey, too close to Emily, and then suddenly gone? If Aria was A, that would have been a crazy twist to kill her best friend.

6. Aria Got Off Easy.

Something else that always bothered me was how Aria never suffered the way the other girls did. Hanna was publicly embarrassed over and over again. Spencer went crazy and had to go to Radley. Emily lost people she loved. Aria had problems, but she never felt fully targeted. It almost felt like she was inside the game instead of being crushed by it.

7. Having Multiple Phones.

And why did she have so many phones? In a show where anonymous texts run everything, she is just casually switching phones and texting from unknown numbers. That is not normal behavior in Rosewood.

8. A and Aria Are Left Handed.

Even the left handed thing. When A suddenly starts using their left hand more consistently, and Aria just happens to be left handed too. Alone that means nothing. But stacked with everything else? It’s weird.

It’s like the show kept building this possibility and then just dropped it.

Maybe the writers changed their minds. Maybe they just liked messing with us. But the more I rewatch, the more it feels like Aria was supposed to be A at some point. Too many things line up. And I’m still not over it.

– Until Next Time♡
